Key Words Artificial intelligence; Artificial wisdom; Historical investigation; Medical mystery; Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer; Guillain-Barré syndrome
Core Tip Zhou et al’s study demonstrates that while Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer can generate plausible hypotheses for historical medical events, it often suffers from citation inaccuracies and overconfidence. The artificial wisdom framework, which integrates artificial intelligence outputs with human expertise, revealed that Campylobacter jejuni-induced Guillain-Barré syndrome is a more credible cause of Alexander the Great’s death than typhoid fever. This approach highlights the importance of human oversight in artificial intelligence-assisted research, offering a model for responsible historical and medical analyses.
