Core Tip Inflammatory bowel disease is a severe relapsing inflammatory disease and early detection and treatment can help improve patients’ outcome. Although endoscopic and histopathological scores remain as the most reliable marker for disease relapses, they are invasive and there is a clear need to find biomarkers that allow a non-invasive and practical approach to disease diagnosis and treatment. Fecal calprotectin has emerged as the most useful biomarker, but there is still a great need to increase accuracy. Novel technologies, including the different omics, and several emerging biomarkers promise to improve the field of inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis and management in the near future, also fueled by the development of artificial intelligence-based strategies.
