Core Tip Anticipating a shortage of supply in ventilated beds during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, hospitals and networks developed or adapted existing triage protocols which were variable. Despite universal acceptance of underlying ethical principles such as the need to maximise benefit and to demonstrate fairness or justice, there were differences and opportunities to implement agreed protocols were lost.. The risks of inequity, bias and rapidly evolving policies driven by urgency or emergency would be minimised by a large-scale, formal review of policy implementation at a national or international scale.
