This cross-sectional study of overweight/obese Chinese adults using quantitative-computed tomography re-evaluated sex-specific associations of abdominal and ectopic fat with impaired glucose metabolism (IGM). Hepatic fat fraction and visceral adipose tissue were independently associated with IGM in both sexes, with odds ratios reaching 5.24-6.45 for hepatic fat fraction and 3.29-6.56 for visceral adipose tissue. Notably, higher subcutaneous adipose tissue was associated with lower IGM odds only in males (odds ratio = 0.13). These findings highlight that sex differences in abdominal fat distribution may contribute to heterogeneity in glucose metabolism disorders. |
