| Core Tip |
Intestinal inflammation disrupts the gut-liver axis at multiple levels, compromising the physiological crosstalk. Microbial dysbiosis, bile acid dysmetabolism, and intestinal barrier failure all converge on the liver and biliary system, causing a variety of diseases, from the most mechanistically precise disease, primary sclerosing cholangitis, to the most prevalent yet often ignored metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. In addition to investigating the diagnostic overlap between primary sclerosing cholangitis, its mimics, and primary biliary cholangitis, this article discusses how new artificial intellegence-driven diagnostic techniques may help close existing gaps in early diagnosis and risk stratification. |
