Core Tip Many rare, chronic, and stable liver diseases are difficult to investigate using conventional randomized controlled trials. N-of-1 trials are randomized, multiple-crossover trials designed to evaluate treatment effects in an individual patient. In this scoping review, we identified only two hepatology studies using this design: One evaluating thiamine in chronic hepatitis B and the other evaluating ursodeoxycholic acid in hepatic sarcoidosis. These findings highlight the underuse of N-of-1 trials as a potentially valuable approach for studying rare, chronic, and stable liver diseases.
