Core Tip This cross-sectional study found that the different pulmonary phenotypes of extraesophageal reflux have distinct reflux and esophageal motility profiles. Airway disorders were mostly characterized by increased distal reflux, whereas parenchymal disorders were associated with proximal mucosal impairment. Interstitial pulmonary involvement was characterized by prominent esophageal dysmotility and impaired distal mucosal integrity. These results suggest that the different phenotypes of extraesophageal reflux have distinct underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.
