Core Tip The interval between peak viral load and severe illness onset in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) enables investigation of the potential role of self-DNA in severe and sustained inflammation. This view is consistent with many special clinical phenotypes of severe COVID-19. DNA sensor research, particularly on cyclic GMP-AMP synthase, has seen rapid progress. These perspectives may also contribute to future prevention and control of infection of other human-lethal viruses originating from bats, such as Ebola, Marburg, and Hendra viruses.
