Core Tip We partially profiled the microenvironment factors in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected patients. In vitro, we stimulated hepatic stellate cell line LX-2 with different growth factors, cytokines or the combination. Our study demonstrated that the hepatic microenvironment involving crosstalk of profibrotic and proinflammatory factors in the hepatitis patients underlies fibrosis. Treating the stellate cells by combining interleukin-1β and transforming growth factor-β1 may serve as an in vitro model for fibrotic HBV infected patients better recapitulating the liver microenvironment.
