Key Words Superb micro-vascular imaging; Contrast-enhanced ultrasound; Carotid atherosclerotic plaques; Ischemic stroke
Core Tip Unstable carotid plaques are easily raptured leading to the occurrence of ischemic stroke. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is currently the primary means of assessing plaque stability. However, CEUS cannot be used for screening for unstable plaques. Superb micro-vascular imaging (SMI) is able to check for low-speed blood flow in the plaque and is expected to be a screening tool for unstable plaques. This study found that the area under curve of SMI predicting ischemic stroke in patients with plaque is 0.878, with a sensitivity of 86.05% and a specificity of 79.27%. SMI level II can be used for predicting ischemic stroke.
