Core Tip Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis is associated with non-invasive diarrheal diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, and colorectal cancers. Bacteroides fragilis enterotoxin (BFT) is responsible for these diseases. The present study demonstrated that signaling pathways involving ROS-mediated ERK, p38 MAPK and Nrf2 activation in dendritic cells are required for heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) induction during exposure to BFT. This signaling pathway is different from our previous report that BFT upregulates HO-1 in intestinal epithelial cells via a p38 MAPK- and NF-κB-dependent pathway. Therefore, this is the first report concerning the effects of BFT on the HO-1 induction pathway in dendritic cells.
