Key Words Smell; Olfactory dysfunction; Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis diseases; Granulomatosis with polyangiitis; Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis; Microscopic polyangiitis
Core Tip Olfactory dysfunction may develop during the course of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitides. Active and chronic sinonasal inflammation, including necrosis and atrophic changes in the mucous membrane, sensorineural involvement as well as other systemic factors can lead to smell impairment in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitides patients and in most of the cases, it results as a combination of them. Systemic treatment of the vasculitis, control of coexisting rhinosinusitis, and management of nasal complications are recommended and could lead to an improvement in olfactory function.
