| Core Tip |
The therapeutic armamentarium for distal malignant biliary obstruction (DMBO) currently includes endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage, and various endoscopic ultrasound-guided biliary drainage techniques. Although ERCP remains the gold standard for DMBO, some endoscopic ultrasound-guided biliary drainage techniques are now considered the preferred second-line strategies and have also been proposed as promising first-line alternatives to ERCP. However, despite its key role in DMBO, the bilirubin normalization rate is underreported and evidence concerning the effectiveness of biliary drainage modalities for bilirubin normalization in DMBO is lacking, particularly for emerging strategies. Our study aimed to review the current evidence on the efficacy of available endoscopic biliary drainage modalities for bilirubin normalization in patients with DMBO. |
