Core Tip	Field cancerization is well established in the gastric mucosa, but whether a comparable cancerized field exists in the histologically normal peritoneum has not been directly demonstrated. We hypothesize that the shared lateral plate mesoderm origin of gastric mesenchyme and peritoneal mesothelium may make the peritoneum a receptive site for disseminated gastric cancer cells. We further hypothesize that the extent of lymph node dissection may serve as an indirect indicator of peritoneal field clearance. Field dissection is a conceptual, unvalidated extension of curative gastrectomy that requires experimental and prospective clinical evaluation.
