| Core Tip |
The conventional one-size-fits-all hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance strategy relies on semiannual ultrasound (US) and alpha-fetoprotein testing, an approach that is inadequate for diverse chronic liver disease populations due to low sensitivity in patients with obesity, cirrhosis, or steatosis. To improve early detection, a shift toward personalized surveillance is recommended. This approach uses validated risk stratification models (such as PAGE-B, aMAP, and PLEASE) to determine individual risk. High-risk individuals, or those with poor US visibility, then receive tailored surveillance using multi-analyte blood-based algorithms (such as GALAD and GAAD) or abbreviated magnetic resonance imaging, which may improve early-stage HCC detection and diagnostic accuracy. |
