| Core Tip |
Enteroatmospheric fistula is created in the operating room, but its outcome is determined in the intensive care unit. Survival depends less on the reconstructive technique eventually chosen than on how the catabolic, septic and fluid-deranged interval preceding it is managed. This review organizes enteroatmospheric fistula care around three critical care endpoints - control of physiologic derangement, delivery of adequate nutrition, and physiologic readiness for reconstruction - and proposes that the timing of definitive repair be determined by these variables rather than by elapsed time since the index operation. |
