Core Tip In this study, we investigate if proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) use in patients with hepatic encephalopathy (HE) predisposes them to more severe stages of HE as per West Haven Criteria. We found that chronic PPI use in cirrhotic patients is associated with significantly higher average West Haven Criteria for HE as compared to patients with no PPI. Our data also indicated that cirrhotic patients on PPI have longer hospital stays, with increased morbidity and mortality during hospital stays.
