Core Tip As the rate of joint arthroplasties continue to rise, so to do the rates of revision arthroplasty. One of the primary indications for revision surgery is peri-prosthetic loosening, however, diagnosis of this condition is extremely challenging. In this article, we discuss some of the major breakthroughs and advancements in imaging techniques that aim to address these challenges. Improvements in metal artefact reduction techniques in computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have markedly improved image quality and diagnosis. In addition, nuclear medicine imaging techniques such as single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography are proving to be an excellent aid in diagnosis.
