Core Tip |
Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are used for chemo in breast cancer patients because they last a long time, can be used for different drugs, and are flexible. This case report describes a breast cancer patient who developed a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection in their spine during chemotherapy. A culture of the wound after removing the PICC showed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The patient had a fever and severe back pain. A magnetic resonance imaging showed that the muscles around the lumbar vertebrae were swollen and had an abnormal signal. This is a sign of vertebral osteomyelitis. The patient’s pain improved when they started antibiotics based on the culture results. This case shows the importance of infection prevention and control to avoid complications from PICCs. |
