Key Words Haptoglobin; Protein; Properties; Polymorphism; Diseases
Core Tip Haptoglobin is a serum glycoprotein of hepatocytic origin synthesized during the acute phases of inflammation. Its synthesis is thought to have pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory, pro-oxidative, and antioxidant actions, depending on the genotype of haptoglobin present in the individual. This is how its polymorphism describes 3 main forms haptoglobin (HP) 2-2, HP 2-1, and HP 1-1. Studies have described the association of haptoglobin genotypes 2-2 with worsening of the disease; while genotype 1-1 is more likely to have a protective action. Thus, it would be important to identify and know one's genotype because this would make it possible to prognosticate and prevent certain diseases.
