| Core Tip |
Common mental disorders, including depression and anxiety, are a major public health concern in low- and middle-income countries, especially among women, who face higher prevalence and poorer outcomes due to gender-based violence, low autonomy, and social stigma. These challenges are further exacerbated by treatment gaps, poor adherence, and high dropout rates. This paper highlights the need for culturally sensitive and gender-responsive care that addresses these sociocultural determinants, with a focus on evidence from India. We advocate for care models that are gender-sensitive and emphasize the potential of digital interventions and self-help groups as effective community-based strategies for managing common mental disorders. |
