| Core Tip |
Preoperative depression and cognitive impairment were identified as independent predictors of postoperative delirium in elderly patients who underwent hip fracture surgery. Using standardized assessments including the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale, Mini-Mental State Examination, and Confusion Assessment Method, we demonstrated that both psychological and cognitive vulnerabilities significantly increased the risk of postoperative delirium. Older age and higher American Society of Anesthesiologists classification further amplified susceptibility. Early screening for depression and cognitive deficits may allow timely risk stratification and targeted perioperative interventions. These findings highlight the importance of integrating mental health evaluations into routine preoperative assessments to improve outcomes in this high-risk population. |
