The study by Capobianco et al highlights the high psychological burden in a diverse cohort of patients with rare and systemic diseases. However, the term “autoimmune ophthalmology” is used loosely, conflating autoimmune conditions with hereditary and degenerative diseases. While the study proves that embedding mental health professionals within ophthalmic departments is feasible, the small sample size and lack of a control group preclude definitive conclusions about causality. Future research must distinguish between functional loss and identity disruption to move from a rhetorical to an analytically robust model of integrated care. |
