Core Tip Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), a proactive risk management tool originating from engineering, provides crucial clinical insights for colorectal surgeons in colorectal cancer perioperative management. This editorial highlight that integrating FMEA into nutritional assessment and intervention, individualized surgical plan customization, and postoperative complication prediction and early intervention may effectively reduce postoperative complications and enhance surgical safety. Despite current limitations of insufficient prospective, multi-center evidence, FMEA-based proactive risk management aligns with precision medicine. And FMEA model is expected to optimize clinical practice and improve colorectal cancer patients’ risk management, prognosis and quality of life with more high-quality clinical research.
