Gastric cancer incidence in China has declined continuously over the past three decades, with the decrease in rural areas being significantly greater than in urban-areas and the urban-rural gap narrowing markedly. Ecological temporal correlations were observed between higher economic income, greater fresh-fruit-and-vegetable consumption, improved industrial-wastewater treatment and declining incidence; these are exploratory findings and causal relationships cannot be established. However, the persistently high incidence in rural areas indicates the need for targeted prevention interventions. |
