Key Words Proton pump inhibitors; Hepatic encephalopathy; Meta-analysis
Core Tip Several studies have been conducted to explore the association between the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) risk in patients with liver cirrhosis. However, their results were controversial. The current evidence indicates that PPI use increases HE risk in patients with liver cirrhosis. Physicians should ban PPIs use in patients with liver cirrhosis when they are used without specific indications.
