Core Tip |
Large studies concerning cirrhosis and elderly are lacking. The healthy ageing concept is becoming primordial today and if cirrhosis is underdiagnosed in elderly, more than age, the presence of comorbidities, comedications and frailty, impact the prognosis. Among etiologies, non-alcoholic fat liver disease is increasing, while viral hepatitis decreases and alcohol consumption is under-estimated and deleterious. The management of cirrhosis complications is close to that of younger patients despite a higher risk of treatment adverse effects and the indication of hepatocellular carcinoma treatment, of trans-jugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, and criteria of intensive care unit admission should be cautious. Finally, adapted exercise, nutrition, and osteoporosis treatment are crucial in elderly. |
