Propofol is commonly used for sedation during endoscopic procedures with increasing data suggesting its superiority to other sedatives, however with reported concerns about possible adverse events. This systematic review and meta-analysis discusses different variants of propofol-based sedation and how they compare to alternative sedatives such as those utilizing benzodiazepines and opioids. We demonstrate that the use of propofol, alone or in conjunction with alternative sedatives, is safe and carries no particular negative outcomes when compared to the widely available combination of alternative sedatives using in endoscopy. |
