The integrity of the gut-liver axis is crucial for the maintenance of the homestasis of the organism. The disruption of the intestinal barrier and consequent increased intestinal permeability has been recently associated with the development of liver damage. This review summarizes present evidence on the relevance of the derangement of the gut-liver axis in the pathogenesis of liver damage and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, the development of the complications of liver cirrhosis and its modifications after liver transplantation. |
