Key Words |
Melatonin; Diabetic retinopathy; Case-control study; Risk factor; Type 2 diabetes |
Core Tip |
Melatonin was reported to be related with diabetes mellitus risk, however, the effect of melatonin on diabetic retinopathy (DR) risk remained unclear. The obtained data in this study demonstrated that plasma melatonin concentration was decreased in DR cases and plasma melatonin could be used as a sensitive and specific marker for the diagnosis of DR. A significantly positive relationship between total bilirubin and melatonin was detected. More related studies were required to understand the role of melatonin in DR. |
