Core Tip |
In this review we intend to ascertain the optimal neoadjuvant therapy in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. In terms of chemotherapy (CT) it has recently been demonstrated that oxaliplatin based CT after short-course radiotherapy presents greater pathological response and lower acute toxicity than concomitant chemoradiotherapy. Studies presented during 2020 have also shown this benefit, as well as better disease and metastasis-free survival. Our review suggests that probably total neoadjuvant treatment should be the new standard treatment for these patients. Though we will have to wait for the full text publications of these studies to confirm this statement. |
