Core Tip |
Radioiodine (RAI) scan is usually performed to detect the existence of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). A proportion of lung cancers demonstrate sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) expression. Lung cancers with NIS expression may be able to uptake RAI and show RAI-avid lesions on RAI scan, leading to misinterpretation upon performing this test for DTC surveillance. Single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography provides morphologic characterization of the functional tumor, improving diagnostic accuracy over RAI scan. |
