Diverticular disease and diverticulitis–specifically sigmoid diverticulitis-represent the most common non-cancerous pathology of the colon. It has traditionally been considered a disease of the elderly and associated with cultural and dietary habits. There is a constant evolution in our understanding and the treatment guidelines. This review provides an update of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and classification, and it highlights changes in the medical and surgical management of diverticulitis. |
