Core Tip |
Platelet count is a well-recognized surrogate marker for progression of liver disease, however a specific cut-off for cirrhosis has not been established. In this study, platelet counts can accurately stratify chronic viral hepatitis patients with cirrhosis; and a platelet count > 143 × 109/L appears to have the most clinical utility in ruling out cirrhosis across all chronic viral hepatitis. This widely available laboratory value may be useful in decision making for the management of patients with chronic viral hepatitis and represents a finding which may be of particular value in a primary care setting. |
