Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 is a single-stranded RNA virus that was first isolated in December 2019. Currently, the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test, performed on respiratory samples collected in suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, is the gold standard diagnostic technique. Chest X-ray or computed tomography (CT) are the main imaging tests used to diagnose COVID-19 pneumonia, with ground-glass opacities and consolidations being the major imaging features encountered. There are other radiological modalities, such as lung ultrasonography and combined positron emission tomography-CT, that can provide further information for initial assessment and follow-up treatment response. |
