Direct metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), a known tool for infection diagnosis, has potential for the diagnosis of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with unknown infectious etiology. The present case report describes the successful application of mNGS for the diagnosis of a patient with ARDS. At the first presentation, the patient was suspected of having an infection based on the chest computed tomography results and mNGS suggested an infection by adenovirus type 7. Subsequently, the patient recovered with the appropriate treatment. The case highlights the usefulness of mNGS for the diagnosis of ARDS caused by infectious agents. |
