Core Tip |
Osteopetrosis is a rare clinical disease which heightens the risk of fractures, but it is significantly difficult to perform surgical treatments in patients with osteopetrosis. Numerous risks such as drill bit breakage and iatrogenic fracture exist during the operation, which can lead to the failure of treatment. We present herein, a case of a subtrochanteric fracture in an adult patient with osteopetrosis that was fixed using a femoral locking compression plate. The postoperative consolidation was delayed, and the patient was subsequently treated with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combined with radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT). This case highlights the ultimate importance of preoperative preparation to avoid the potential risks of surgical failure. Furthermore, fractures in a patient with osteopetrosis have a high risk of delayed union and nonunion, which might be cured by PRP combined with rESWT. |
