Core Tip |
In our study, we carefully assessed whether antibiotic resistance for commonly used antibiotics for H. pylori infection varies between the antrum and corpus of the stomach. Interestingly, discordant antibiotic susceptibility between antrum and corpus isolates accounted for 15.2% of the patients. DNA fingerprinting analysis revealed no substantial differences among DNA patterns between antrum and corpus isolates in the majority of patients suggesting an infection with a single H. pylori strain. In our opinion, different antibiotic susceptibility between antrum and corpus biopsies represents a possible explanation for treatment failure and resistant H. pylori strains may be missed if just one biopsy is taken from the stomach for H. pylori susceptibility testing. Those findings are in our opinion of great clinical interest. |
