Core Tip |
Health-related quality of life (QoL) and functional capacity are main indicators of surgical outcomes in patients after cardiac surgery. Preoperative health condition, age, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, operative risk, type of procedure, perioperative complications and comorbidities are main determinants of the QoL after ICU discharge. Following heart surgery, the physical status of elderly patients is lower than that of younger patients but improves over time. Results from studies regarding patients’ health status and functional ability after cardiac surgery reveal significant improvements in QoL and functional capacity in the short and long term. Cardiac rehabilitation has a central role for their functional recovery. |
