Core Tip |
Diagnosing goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the appendix preoperatively is very difficult, because most patients with a chief complaint of acute abdomen undergo appendectomy based on a preoperative diagnosis of appendicitis. Even if colonoscopy is performed, accurate endoscopic diagnosis is very difficult because GCCs show a submucosal growth pattern with invasion of the appendiceal wall. The possibility of GCC must always be kept in mind during surgical treatment for presumptive appendicitis. This report includes an extremely rare example of correct preoperative diagnosis of appendiceal GCC. |
