| Core Tip |
Limbic encephalitis (LE) can occur as a paraneoplastic symptom or in the absence of a malignancy. Paraneoplastic encephalopathies are rare neurological disorders associated with antineuronal antibodies. Symptoms include memory loss, impaired mental function, behavioral disorders, and epileptic seizures. Antibodies against extracellular antigens, such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) B receptor (GABABR), are associated with a higher risk of tumor development. Glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies have been linked to several neurological syndromes, which are hypothesized to result from decreased GABA ergic transmission. This article presents two cases of GABABR antibody-related LE resulting from small cell lung carcinoma with neurological symptoms that were managed with intravenous immunoglobulin therapy. |
