Key Words Diabetes mellitus; Insulin sensitivity; Beta cell function; Ferritin; Liver
Core Tip Hemochromatosis and excess iron load has been implicated to play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus. Serum ferritin concentration was significantly higher in diabetic subjects. Serum ferritin concentration was negatively associated with insulin sensitivity, but not with beta cell function. The association of alanine aminotransferase correlated with serum ferritin concentration, but not insulin sensitivity, sug-gesting the role of the liver in iron-associated insulin resistance. Disordered iron metabolism could play a role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus through its effect on liver function.
