Diet plays an important role in development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and can shape intestinal microbiota, which is closely linked to NAFLD. We studied the effects of high-fat, high-sugar and high-protein diets on intestinal microbiota and NAFLD development in an isocaloric way. NAFLD-inducing effects of high-fat and high-sugar diets, compared with high-protein diet, are independent from calories, and these diets can alter intestinal microbiota independently from calories. The effects of these diets on NAFLD development at the same caloric intake may be associated with changes in intestinal microbiota. These findings are meaningful for appropriate dietary therapy for NAFLD. |
