Core Tip The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic arrives amid a population increasingly affected by metabolic diseases such as DM2 and metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Patients with MAFLD can have chronic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and higher expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor, which could synergize with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pathophysiology, predisposing a greater risk of adverse outcomes. Interestingly a high prevalence of liver steatosis in postmortem samples of patients who had COVID-19 has been found. Moreover, the presence of liver fibrosis has been shown to worsen prognosis in these patients, as a result, all patients with COVID-19 should be assessed for the presence of these comorbidities and given a closer follow-up.
