Sepsis is defined as life threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Early diagnosis of sepsis and prompt initiation of antimicrobials is essential. Biomarkers may be helpful in early diagnosis, prognostication and monitoring of response to therapy in septic patients. We review commonly used biomarkers such as procalcitonin, presepsin, soluble urokinase plasminogen activator, etc and their utility in clinical practice. |
