| Core Tip |
Second kidney transplantation (SKT) is a viable option for patients with failed first kidney transplantation (FKT). Although the first primary nonfunction graft is a common contributor to SKT, it is also a potential outcome among a major proportion of those populations. Also, it is a significant risk factor for graft survival among those patients with functioning SKTs. Hence, the non-immediate recovery of the first graft function and delayed graft function in the second graft are significantly associated with unfavorable second graft survival rates. Inspite of this wide spectrum of risk factors, patient and graft survival rates in SKT seemed to be similar to those of FKT. SKT should be recommended for patients with failed FKT. |
