Core Tip |
Atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR) is an uncommon condition that carries a high mortality rate if not recognised early. We describe the case of a 21-year-old man who suffered ASR as a result of a both acute Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and recent cocaine ingestion. An incidental splenic artery pseudoaneurysm was also discovered on imaging which required endovascular embolisation. An association between ASR, acute EBV infection, cocaine use and splenic artery pseudoaneurysm has never been described previously in the literature. ASR requires a high index of suspicion to diagnose clinically and requires prompt, appropriate management to reduce morbidity and mortality. |
