Core Tip |
Diabetes is an important predictor of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) morbidity and mortality. The immune response impairment presented by diabetes mellitus (DM) may be among the underlying mechanisms of the association between diabetes and COVID-19. DM with uncontrolled hyperglycemia is more prone to develop severe COVID-19 due to T cell dysfunction. Therefore, DM is often associated with impaired innate and adaptive immune function, thus greatly increasing the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in DM patients. |
