| Core Tip |
This randomised controlled trial compared the incidence of hypoxaemia in those receiving supplemental oxygen at 20 L/min via an oxygenating mouthguard to those receiving supplemental oxygen at 2 L/min via standard nasal cannula during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy performed under deep sedation. A statistically significant difference in the incidence of hypoxaemia was demonstrated. No significant difference was observed in rates of adverse events or patient-reported outcome measures. We conclude that the use of supplemental oxygen at 20 L/min via an oxygenating mouthguard offers a novel approach to reducing the incidence of hypoxaemia in patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy under deep sedation. |
