Percutaneous catheter drainage is an important method for drainage of pancreatic fluid collections. In the early stage of the disease (2-4 wk), it is often the method of choice. It is shown to be effective alone in almost 50% of the patients. It is also an important part of the dual modality treatment that involves endoscopic drainage. It acts as a gateway for percutaneous endoscopic and minimally invasive surgical necrosectomy. There is evolving data regarding the indications and timing of drainage. Additionally, there are several recent studies describing methods to improve the percutaneous catheter drainage outcomes. |
